Browser Compatibility

Our web site has a new modern appearance, more information, and an easy-to-use menu navigation system. Although our site was developed to comply as much as possible to current web standards, older browsers, and some recent browsers, exhibit problems. These problems are caused by browsers not complying to web standards and/or having major bugs. There are well behaved, modern, standards compliant browsers available for all platforms, please view the NESAC/BIO Supported Browsers list.

Navigating This Site...

Our navigation system behaves like the menu bar in a normal application. To navigate, move your mouse over the buttons labeled "Home," "Research," etc. to see popup menus. To go to a sub-menu's or button's topic, click that topic. Unlike a menu bar, clicking a button's topic does not show sub-menus. The menus list every topic, and almost every page, on the site.

To the right is an example of how the menus should appear. The mouse was first moved over the "More Info" button, then over "Tutorials," then over "Techniques," then over "ESCA" and down to "ToF-SIMS." If the menus do not appear neatly aligned as shown to the right, or they do not work properly, first check the NESAC/BIO Supported Browsers list to see if your browser has known problems. If your browser is listed as compatible, then contact the site's designer/developer: Samuel Herschbein, or the webmaster: Seth Whelan.

The menus also serve as the site map: browse though them to see the site's hierarchy and available information. To the left of the menu buttons is text with the location of the current page in the site's hierarchy. Click on any underlined text to quickly jump several levels back through the hierarchy.

Viewing This Site...

To best view our site, please set your browser window to at least 1000 pixels wide.

We carefully chose the site's font sizes to be large enough to accommodate most viewer's vision needs. The most common display problem is when text is too large for the area it fits in, resulting in small white gaps in the cranberry vertical borders on the left and right sides of a page. This is caused by the browser using a font size larger than what our site either specified or expects it to use.

Many browsers have settings that allow the user to set font sizes. One setting is a minimum font size, if the minimum is set too high, you may experience display problems. Another setting is worded similar to: "Allow documents to use other fonts." If this setting is turned off, some browsers ignore the font sizes specified by our web pages and use larger sizes.

To make fonts display in the proper size for your monitor, you may need to tell the operating system and/or the browser your monitor's pixel resolution. Monitor pixel resolution is the number of pixels (dots) per inch your monitor displays, typically from 72dpi (dots per inch) to 108dpi.

If you have problems viewing or navigating our site, first check the NESAC/BIO Supported Browsers list to see if your browser has known problems. If your browser is listed as compatible, check your system's pixel resolution, minimum font size, etc. settings to ensure they are properly set. If you still have problems, please contact the site's designer/developer: Samuel Herschbein, or the webmaster: Seth Whelan.
